Journey to Wellness
Each month I have this unique opportunity to share my MS story. Years ago I chose to be "enabled" by MS rather than "disabled," and I believe that each one of us has the opportunity to make that same choice. My task is to help you believe that also. I believe my body is designed to be self-healing, and that my challenge is to learn how to "listen" to my body and to help it turn on that innate self-healing process. Everything I have learned and recommend is to help all of us do exactly that. Whether you are new to Journey to Wellness, or you have been with me for years, I warmly welcome you to our world-wide network of readers. I hope something included in this issue "speaks" to you and challenges you to move ahead in your own journey to wellness.
___________________________________ SPRINGTIME IS MY FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR. It reminds me of new beginnings and new opportunities. This last month I have seemed to be reminded of those opportunities everywhere I look. To me it is a time of renewal ̶ a time of reassessing how I am doing toward accomplishing my goals. And of course sometimes it reminds me to stop putting off accomplishing whatever I have made a determination that I wish to complete. It also reminds me how precious life is, and what a short time I/we have on this planet. All my life I have had a love affair with poetry, and this is one of my long-time favorites. It describes my feelings today . . . exactly.
ODE TO SPRING
I meant to do my work today - But a brown bird sang in the apple tree, And a butterfly flitted across the field, And all the leaves were calling me.
And the wind went sighing over the land Tossing the grasses to and fro, And a rainbow held out its shining hand - So what could I do but laugh and go?
- Richard Le Gallienne
Actually as a home-owner I find myself with a strange dichotomy of feelings about springtime - especially one like this year. First I love the feeling of renewal that comes in the spring as the bulbs begin to poke their heads through the soil, looking for warm sunshine. Where I live we seem to go almost overnight from cold winter rains to warm, sunny and dry days. Those first warm spring days always make me want to get out my gardening tools and start digging in my yard.
Thanks to a weeks of heavy rains in my area of North-Central California, this year my yard has some of the most healthy weeds I have ever seen. So with some help from a local teenager, I am waging a battle with those weeds.
Actually the cycles of the seasons of the year are much like the cycles of our lives. Sometimes we have dark winters to endure, but it has always seemed to me that those winters are less dark and seemingly shorter when we keep our eye on the springtime of renewal that invariably follows. I believe that the more we concentrate on the coming spring, the shorter the dark period will be and the sooner the renewal of spring will materialize. The reverse is also true if we dwell on the darkness. In the last five years since I lost my son, Kevin, I have found myself counseling people who are experiencing their own dark night of the soul when they have lost someone close to them.
Whether the dark winters of our lives are physical, or psychological, the sense of loss is very similar. I have found that the same "healing tools" I learned to use to overcome my PP MS, were equally applicable to the dark night of my soul, while learning to overcome acute grief. I can look back now and see the same factors at work.
THE GOOD NEWS IS that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and to a big degree we - each one of us - determine when our own personal springtime will appear.

- Healthy Food Tips and Recipes
by Mardy Wilson, the Playing with Food Lady Greetings to all, and to Spring! Seeing early shoots of green, happy Crocus colors, and warmer days all compelled me to buy asparagus, lemons, tomatoes, arugula, salmon, herbs, and go nuts preparing “Spring things,” so this month I'm sharing a Spring Meal of Poached Salmon or shrimp, Asparagus, Tomatoes and Blackberries. Please keep in mind that these recipes serve 6. Olive oil is one of the “very good guys.” Let your taste buds be your guide.
Poached Salmon or Shrimp
6 5 oz. salmon fillets, preferably with skin on, or 2 lbs. large shrimp, shelled
and de-veined Add water to a wide pot or skillet, add seasonings, bring to a boil, turn off heat, let steep for about 10 minutes. Turn on heat, bring to a high simmer. Add salmon, skin side down, or shrimp. Be sure the high simmer is maintained. After 3 min., turn salmon, simmer another 3 min. The centers should be a dark pink, not overdone. If using large shrimp, simmer about 4 min., they should be opaque inside, not tough. Take off heat. Pour off water. If preferred, slip the salmon skins off. Either serve hot or refrigerate, covered, for serving later at room temp. Note: You may also poach chicken
breasts, 1 per person, same timing as salmon.
Asparagus in Lemon
Garlic Butter or Olive Oil
2 lbs asparagus Thoroughly clean asparagus. Cut the bottoms off by about ½ in. If you are lucky enough to find fat spears of asparagus; rather than snapping off the bottom ends; using a vegetable peeler, peel off about 2 inches of the base of each spear. You will have a beautiful presentation while keeping most of the spear in tact, giving you more edible asparagus. In a large pot or skillet, simmer the Asparagus in lightly salted water for about 6 to 8 min., until barely cooked through, still bright green, the peeled ends a lighter green. Pour off water. Leave in pot or skillet if serving immediately. If serving at room temp. put asparagus in cold water to keep its green color. Note: While asparagus is cooking; in another small pan, heat minced garlic, butter or oil. Simmer until garlic is lightly browned. Add lemon juice, stir and take off heat. Watch carefully-burned garlic is nasty. Arrange asparagus on a serving plate, spears over lapping, end to end, layer lemon slices down center. Drizzle garlic butter/oil over all. Don’t soak the asparagus in the butter or oil—a little goes a long way. If you have too much butter or oil, use it later. NOTE: If you use only olive oil,
this may be served at room temperature.
6 tomatoes-cut into a large dice with juices. Juices will help to create a
“dressing.” Combine all, toss well, serve soon before Arugula begins to wilt. Blackberries & Lemon Sorbet with fresh mint Put a scoop or two of sorbet into 6 chilled bowls, add blackberries, sprinkle mint over all. Enjoy! The next issue of Journey to Wellness will bring yogurt and all things fresh to you. In addition I'll share some of my favorite kitchen gadgets which I hope will prove to be helpful to you.

OUR
INDIVIDUAL PERSPECTIVEI was doing a consultation with a newsletter subscriber recently and she told me that she had been a subscriber for several years. Her next comment was - and I paraphrase, "I don't understand why I am not as successful as you have been at halting my MS. I try to follow what you suggest. I always eat a 'clean' diet, and I try to be positive, etc." After our talk I began to wonder why she had never "heard" what I teach. In reviewing my notes of our talk, I realized that she had her own agenda that kept her from understanding what she needed to do.
You see, we all have a perspective . . . our own personal set of "glasses" through which we see everyone and everything. That perspective is created by parents, peers, teachers, the media, etc. Everything we have been exposed to during our lifetime. The degree to which our psyche will look at other perspectives varies from person to person. Some people have a tendency to question everything, while others rarely question their preconceived ideas at all.
Psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw is known for asking a troubled person who is resistant to his suggestions of help, "How's that working for you?" If you are resistant to natural self-healing, I suggest you ask yourself that same question. After all, if what you have been doing isn't working, you have nothing to lose by conscientiously doing it my way. After all, natural self-healing has no negative side effects.
If you will allow me to "loan" you my set of glasses, long enough for you to view your life as I view mine, I guarantee your attitude will change and you will become a different person as your MS symptoms reverse.
The healer isn't in a pill or a shot or some other procedure . . . the healer resides inside of you. It begins with how you feel about yourself, and your place in the Universe. Once we realize the incredible power we possess, then we just must learn to connect with the healer within. We all have one, but most of the time we are too busy to listen to "the still small voice within."
Enhancing
Your Experience with Your LifeDesign Videos
There are some "tricks" I have learned to making your motivation/affirmation videos more effective. You may stand or sit. Then follow this two-three minute combined breathing and arm exercise.
(1) raise both arms straight up as far as you can, palms facing each other, 8-10 inches apart, as you inhale, then (2) bring them out to your sides at shoulder height with palms turned down, as you exhale, then (3) bring them straight out in front of you, as you inhale, palms facing each other, and then (4) down to your lap, as you exhale, with palms down. Repeat this movement several times.
By doing this slowly and deliberately for just 2-3 minutes before watching the video you will increase the movement of chi in your body and make the videos many times more effective. Incidentally, this is a great little exercise to do anytime to increase your energy level. Most of the fatigue associated with MS can be relieved with this kind of simple exercise.

PEOPLE COME INTO YOUR LIFE FOR A REASON ― People come into your life path for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you discover which one it is, you will know what to do with that person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They have come to assist you through a difficulty… To provide you with guidance and support… To aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually… They may seem like they are a godsend, and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then without any wrongdoing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die… Sometimes they walk away… Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand…. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled… Their work is done. The prayer you sent up has now been answered and now it is time to move on.
Some people come into your life for a SEASON. Because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons.
Things you must build upon to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person, and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind, but friendship is clairvoyant.
Thank you for being a part of my life… Whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime

GRATITUDE: Effective and ineffective ways to express gratitude
Did you know that there is an effective and an ineffective way to express gratitude?
Unfortunately, the ineffective way is far more common. It is sort of the default form of gratitude that most people fall into. I was stuck here for a really long time until I found a far more powerful way to practice gratitude, one that moved me into perfect alignment with abundance and greatly accelerated the Law of Attraction.
First, let me talk about the ineffective way to express gratitude. This is gratitude that you express that is related to what is happening in your life right now. It is closely related to the gratitude and appreciation we learn to express as children (i.e. to say thanks) and that is probably why it is often the default and why so many people get stuck here.
Ineffective gratitude includes things such as: * your health * your relationships * your material possessions * your friends and family * a nice vacation
I am not saying that there is anything wrong with this form of gratitude. All I am saying is that it is not nearly as powerful as what I am about to show you.
Often the problem with the above form of gratitude is that it comes from a place of lack. If you have ever expressed gratitude while thinking "at least... I am healthy, or at least I have a great family" then you know what I mean.
This form of gratitude is extremely week because it is based on the present circumstances. In other words, this form of gratitude is conditional. It makes it sound that you are grateful "only if you have good health, a great relationship, etc." Unfortunately, conditional gratitude fails to activate the law of attraction. The universe does not respond to conditional requests.
The second form of gratitude is complete in that it is a celebration of life itself, for all the experiences you are having. One other key difference is this. Effective gratitude comes from an underlying attitude vs. a temporary focus on one item or thing to be grateful for.
With practice, this holistic form of gratitude can become second nature. When it does, the law of attraction will flow far more easily into your life.
The more powerful form of gratitude includes items such as:
* your life * this awesome planet * for being who you are * for future events * for problems, challenges, and hardships * for your mistakes * for your mind * for your freedom
In other words, you become grateful for this amazing journey of your life regardless of what happens and where it takes you because you know that it is just right for you and that everything is happening for a reason.
When you are expressing effective gratitude, fear and loss disappear. There is no focus on any lack and when you reach this state, that is when abundance can truly start flowing into your life.
Being grateful for what you have in your life (your health, relationships, etc.) has its place. But when you start feeling truly grateful for everything that is happening in your life and open your heart, you will be amazed at how quickly the universe will start to answer.
So, start creating these feelings now, even in the most unlikely or unpleasant circumstances and notice how you begin to attract whatever you focus on into your life.

Thank you Ilona. Just knowing that one person finds help from what I do makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Hope you are doing well. Thank you so much for your wonderful and always informative newsletters. Just wished to know if you have heard about chia seeds. It is supposed to have countless benefits. So I was wondering if it would help MS patients in any way since it is rich in omega 3 and has calcium among other things. Best Regards Always!!! /S/ Sabiha
Hi Sabiha. Nice to hear from you. I know of chia seeds from watching Dr. Oz, but if you are taking the recommended supplements, I see no particular reason to add chia seeds. But it wouldn't hurt either! I hope all is well with you. Keep smiling! It is better medicine than chia!! Love to you, and thanks for writing.

Thank you for the simple QiGong exercise from Dr. Jahnke. It was so easy, and felt so good, that I want to order the QiGong/Tai Chi DVD. Thanks for all you do. /s/ Gracie C.
The Blood Sugar Solution by Mark Hyman, MD
I have just finished reading this highly acclaimed book on the rapidly declining state of health in our society, on a world-wide scale. Almost every page contained yet another jaw-dropping fact. I have always been acutely aware that a healthy diet forms the basis of health ― we truly are what we eat ― but the scope of the importance of what we eat is startling, even to me. I can and do recommend to you that you need to cut out processed sugars and flour, but I cannot speak from the scientific perspective with which Dr. Hyman speaks. He covers multiple facets of diet and nutrition, outlining how different factors interrelate to affect the way the body regulates itself. Every reader of this newsletter NEEDS to read Dr. Hyman's The Blood Sugar Solution. I assure you it will forever change how you feel about food and health. The Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukov One of my favorite authors is Gary Zukov, author of The Seat of the Soul. It has been around for a few years, but If you have not read this book, I urge you to get it today. It is one of those life-changing books that comes along all too infrequently. Creating authentic power is like baking bread. First, you have to want to do it. Then you need to follow the recipe. If you do these things, you'll have lots of opportunities to experiment and be guided by your inner promptings. As with bread, it's your own loaf that you are baking. Unlike bread, no one else can bake it for you. The recipe for authentic power is as simple as the recipe for bread—harmony, cooperation, sharing and reverence for Life. Those are the ingredients. How you put them together depends upon you, but without all of them, authentic power is not possible any more than bread is possible without the ingredients that are required to make it. This is how to do it. First, clear the countertop of everything but what you will need to "bake" authentic power. That means put every intention aside for the moment except the intentions to create harmony, cooperation, sharing and reverence for Life. Second, keep doing it. Soon you will start to create some harmony, cooperation, sharing and reverence for Life. The bread is baking. Eventually, you will create these things moment by moment, choice by choice. That is authentic power. Experiences of fulfillment, meaning and awareness can be created. This is big news. Baseball is easy to understand. Becoming a good player is more difficult. First, you have to get into good condition and you have to stay that way. Then you have to learn skills such as pitching, catching and batting. Then you need to practice, practice, practice. You need a team to play on and other teams to play with. Anyone can understand baseball in an afternoon, but no one can become a good player overnight. Everyone needs time to learn, practice, apply, and then learn, practice and apply again. This takes time and intention. It takes focus and determination. So does creating authentic power. Knowing how is easy. Just set the intentions to create harmony, cooperation, sharing and reverence for Life no matter what, and keep them. The rest is learning what these things mean, how to do them and practice. You also need other people to practice with. In this case, you don't have to recruit them. They are always there. They are the people you get angry with, jealous of, sad about or frightened of. To improve your ball game, you have to become aware of yourself. For example, you need to become conscious of how your body moves when you swing the bat. Great batters know exactly what they are doing as they do it. They don't close their eyes and swing. They are conscious of every muscle. Are you aware of your intentions? When you are angry, what are your intentions? When you are jealous, what are your intentions? Trying to change your intentions when you don't know what they are is like trying to go to New York when you don't know where you are starting from. Going to New York from San Francisco is one thing. Getting there from Paris is another. When you are aware of all your intentions, you are like a great batter who is conscious of every muscle as he moves his body toward the ball. He can change what needs to be changed. He knows how to get where he wants to go because he knows exactly where he is. When you choose your intentions according to what you want to create, that is responsible choice. When you intend to create harmony, cooperation, sharing and reverence for Life, your intentions and the intentions of your soul are the same. When that happens, you become authentically powerful. Creating authentic power is a process. Each time you choose harmony, cooperation, sharing or reverence for Life, you challenge parts of yourself that want other things. They are the parts of you that are angry, sad, jealous and frightened. The more you challenge them, the less power they have over you and the more power you have over them. Eventually, their power over you disappears. That is how authentic power is created—intention by intention, and choice by choice. You cannot wish it, pray it or meditate it into being any more than you can wish, pray or meditate yourself into being a great baseball player. If you want to bake bread, you have to know how to do it. If you want to create authentic power, you have to know how to do that, too. Then you have to do it. Change, possibilities, and power that we could not have imagined are reshaping the entire human experience. New values, goals, and intentions are everywhere appearing like grass in the spring. This grass is growing quickly, and wherever it grows, beauty appears. With it come fields of flowers and vast forests. A new and surprising world is emerging in new and surprising ways. We are all students in a new school, explorers in new territory, and pioneers in a new human experience. This unprecedented transformation in human experience has two parts. We can call them Process A and Process B. Process A is happening automatically, so to speak. No one needs to do anything to make Process A happen. Process A is occurring in millions of individuals, and soon Process A will occur in all humans. Process B is a different story. It requires choice. Specifically, you must choose to make Process B happen or it will not happen in you. Even if others choose to make Process B happen in themselves, Process B will not happen in you until you choose to make it happen. In short, (1) Process A is happening to everyone, or soon will, and there is nothing that you or anyone else can do about it; (2) Process B is happening only to individuals who choose to make it happen in themselves; no one else can make it happen in them; and they cannot make it happen in anyone else.
Featured Books,
DVD Exercise Programs and VideosPlease, everyone, do not sit around and wait for testing and treatment if warranted for CCSVI. Even if that becomes the standard MS treatment down the road, you need to get moving and improve your quality of life NOW. Even those who have the corrective procedure done still have to work to recover their quality of life. How do you do that? I suspect that you already know. Start a simple daily meditation ritual, and move your body with healthy exercise and breathing exercises. Oh you say you can't exercise? Excuse me, but that is rubbish. There is no such thing as a person who can't exercise. You can do a very effective exercise program sitting in a wheelchair, or even lying in bed. You just begin with some simple deep breathing and very simple arm movements. An example is the simple arm movement exercise I include above. EVERYBODY CAN IMPROVE HIS/HER OVERALL HEALTH WITH A COMMITMENT TO EXERCISE. If you don't have them, order Yoga for MS (for strength) and/or Tai Chi/Qi Gong for Seniors (for healing) or Gentle Fitness (for overall fitness) and get moving. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT! Then pick two or three things from one or two of these programs and get started. Soon you won't believe what a tremendous improvement you will experience. The only thing hindering you is your own lack of enthusiasm and passion. There is no person who cannot improve the quality of his or her life with exercise. Just get moving! I absolutely know that one of the primary reasons I live a normal, healthy life today is because of these exercise programs. Come on. Get started today!
