Hello to all my Journey to Wellness friends. Welcome to Summer, 2017.
If you live in a part of the world that experiences hot summers, such as inland north-central California where I live, then the heat is already on, together with air conditioning. If you live in Australia or New Zealand, then you have had enough hot weather for this year and you are entering the cool months of your fall and winter.
Whichever is true for you, each day presents us with a new opportunity to create an amazing day. It is true, however, that some physical challenges, like multiple sclerosis, present extra challenges brought on by heat intolerances. Summer heat was always a challenge for me before I reversed my MS symptoms.
Today you may do an Internet Google search for "heat intolerance for MS" and you will find lots of references, with all kinds of suggestions for coping with heat-related challenges. You will soon learn that a few adjustments in your life will in most cases make this problem easy to maneuver.
If you are new to Journey to Wellness, welcome. Every month [or when the spirit moves me] you will receive a brief e-mail that will contain a link to the NL at my website. The current NL is always available at the website. There is no strict timetable to the newsletters. My intention is that they publish approximately monthly. One thing I can promise you is that you will not have your inbox filled with lots of missives from me.
A healthy lifestyle means life-long learning. I am fond of saying that we never learn it all . . . it is really a process of becoming. If you are new to this style of living, you are in for lots of a-ha-has. When I was new to learning about self-healing and all it included, I was always having new and exciting discoveries.
Perhaps you don't know that I was a music teacher and taught piano and organ for about 25 years. I remember the excitement I felt as a young music student when I learned a new bit of music theory and was able to recognize that technique in compositions of the masters. Learning about self-healing held many of those kinds of a-ha-ha moments for me.
Please know that if you believe it will work - really believe at the depths of your being - IT WILL WORK FOR YOU! The reverse is also true. If you believe that it will not work for you, IT WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU!

Given what we now know about the UBC CCSVI trial, it would seem it was designed to fail. This assessment is based on the following aggregate of information.
It is established beyond doubt that the study leader, Anthony Traboulsee, is an agent of MS pharmaceutical companies (i.e. he receives money from them). Thus, he has a strong financial incentive to have the trial fail. Traboulsee's pharmaceutical connections and motivations were revealed in spades by his
recent comment, "We hope these findings, .. will persuade people with MS not to pursue liberation therapy. Fortunately there are a range of drug treatments for MS that have been proven through rigorous studies to be safe and effective at slowing disease progression." In fact, no valid study has shown the MS drugs slow progression in the long run, and that is why the drug companies and their agents such as Traboulsee are paranoid about CCSVI treatment which has slowed or stopped progression for many. You have to admire Traboulsee's chutzpah with his claim the MS drugs are safe, given the knowledge that some of them are occasionally lethal.
Another key fact strongly suggests the trial was designed to fail by way of ineffective vein treatment. It seems the researchers did not measure blood flow before and during the trial to determine if the angioplasty substantially improved blood flow, and that the veins remained open during the trial period. The requirement for such information cannot be over-emphasized. If they have a valid reason for why they neglected to gather such essential measurements, let’s hear it .
Right now, given the drug company connections, we have to assume such data were not collected because they would readily reveal ineffective vein opening and the bogus nature of the trial. Finally, their motivations are also revealed by statements such as:
“The conclusions about the so-called “liberation therapy .. represent the most definitive debunking” of CCSVI treatment. Objective, professional scientists do not use such pejorative terms as “so-called” and “debunking.” Honest researchers with no hidden agenda would simply say our research does not support claims that CCSVI treatment is of value for MS.
In conclusion, diverse information suggests the main goal of the trial was to debunk the value of CCSVI treatment so as to discourage CCSVI treatments, which represent a potential loss of drug sales. Thus it was designed to fail. This was all very predictable as discussed by our president (Dr. Embry) 8 years ago. (See extensive .pdf documents at www.Direct-MS.org under CCSVI). (2) 19-year-old girl dies from taking GARDASIL
Karen and I have been following the Gardasil vaccine controversy for a long time. Recently I came across the following video and sent it to Karen. Be sure to watch this video:

"With all the underhanded things big pharma and the FDA pulls off, THIS ONE REALLY BURNS MY *ss! I guess it’s because it’s assumed that these kids are going to live a life that puts them in danger of getting this disease. That a drug that was crammed through the testing stage on women over 30…..that Rick Perry ( gov. of Texas ) was caught red handed taking a $5000 bribe making it law that this must be given to school children…..( My BP has jumped 50 points while writing this ) these are only a few things. Hopefully there are enough people out there that will not let this news die."
(3) BIOTIN (B7) PHASE 3 TRIAL - Update from Karen
"I’ve been doing this (taking Biotin) on my own for over 1 ½ years. 300mgs a day/ 100mgs 3x. I have gone off of it to see if there is any difference, then back on, and yes . . . I do find it helps with energy and bladder function. It has helped me enough that my Neuro has followed my response and now is compounding B7 for his patients that are interested.
I buy mine loose and take it with a smidgen spoon. All information is available on-line and on Facebook Biotin for Progressive MS site. I figure why not? I have had no side effects, and it is reasonably priced and easy to do. With the results I have had, I will continue." /s/ Karen
Qi Gong - Just what is it and why I recommend it so highly
First, Qi or chi, is the energy that flows through us and powers and sustains our body. It is connected to and renewed by our breathe, which Dr. Roger Jahnke suggests is our connection to our Source (the Universal Presence, God, or whatever one chooses to call that Energy).
Qi Gong: Organized Movements with a Purpose
My simple, easy-to-understand definition of Qi Gong is a series of movements designed to boost our chi energy and remove any blockages. According to ancient Chinese wisdom, when we are healthy the chi flows freely. But when for some reason that energy flow is blocked or slowed, we develop what the Chinese call dis-ease, and in Western medicine we call disease.
The ancient Chinese medical men did not give names to symptoms, but rather believed that when the body develops dis-ease of any kind, the way to restore health is simply to remove those energy blockages and restore the body to health.
I credit Qi Gong combined with lifestyle changes with restoring my body to health. I also was helped greatly by the modified Hatha Yoga, Yoga for MS, (see Books and DVD Orders below) in the early stages of my recovery. There are many similarities between some forms of Yoga and Qi Gong.

Note: Tai Chi came out of Qi Gong, and Dr. Jahnke often uses those names almost interchangeably.
I have been thinking a lot recently about better ways to explain how powerful our breath is. We know it keeps us alive, that we cannot live without it, but there is so much more to our breath.
Our breath is actually SOURCE ENERGY. Source Energy you say? Yes! It is the awesome fuel that powers our body, from our first breath at birth, to our last at death. If you have ever seen someone take their last breath, or seen their body shortly thereafter, you absolutely know that the person is no longer residing in their body.
When my son, Kevin, passed on to his next experience 11 years ago, I remember the feelings I had when I placed my hand on his forehead for the last time in the mortuary. I was reminded that day of how I always think of my body as the physical "house" I live in. And by maintaining healthy lifestyle choices, we can aid our body in living to a healthy old age.
One of those choices is learning healthy breath control. With each deliberate breath we inhale a deposit of Source Energy to every cell of our body. I always emphasize what I call "breath work" in all consultations. It is one of those easy, simple-to-do life changing things we can all do to help our bodies stay healthy and/or heal.
What really is source energy? Our source is often referred to as God, The Devine, The Universe, etc. All are used to describe this energy from a source outside ourselves. I choose to call it my Source, which expresses itself as a life-giving energy.
If you have not read Dr. Jahnke's The Healer Within, please put it on your "must get" list to learn the how and why of Qi Gong. I often refer to that book as my healing bible.

EATING A REALLY HEALTHY DIET
Do you feed your family and/or yourself really healthy food? Natural, unprocessed food? Or have you been brainwashed about what healthy food really is?
The mega food processors have psychologically "taught" us that all they must do is tell us a particular food is healthy and we will buy it. All the while they add sugar or high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners to almost every prepared food.
We absolutely know these Franken foods are connected to the mushrooming numbers of cases of type two diabetes, heart disease, cancers, etc. A classic example of a Franken food is margarine. The same thing is true for poly unsaturated and hydrogenated fats. The onus is on us to educate ourselves about these fake foods.
And we must learn to seriously read labels. The important thing is the ingredients list. Some of the unhealthiest foods in our supermarkets are salad dressings. They are most often made from unhealthy fats and a large percentage contains sugars as well. My rule of thumb is: If sugar or a sweetener of any kind is listed in the first three ingredients I will not purchase the product. And the oil must be olive oil.
Don't be mislead by the food marketing tricks used to get us to fall prey to these unhealthy prepared foods. Psychologists call these effects a "health halo." If you really want a shock next time you are in your local supermarket, take a few extra minutes and seriously read the "ingredients" list on prepared food labels.
Salad dressings and breakfast cereals are a great place to start. And don't forget frozen entrees. They are all notoriously bad. Another example is food bars. Compare the ingredients label on your so-called "healthy" food bar and a candy bar. You will be amazed . . . they are almost identical in most cases.
We are bombarded by so-called "healthy" creative ad claims for so many prepared foods. On television, the Internet, in newspapers and magazines, stuffed into our mailbox every week, etc. Please don't be duped.
Do not fall for the "organic" label that is frequently placed on products containing unhealthy ingredients. That is sort of a "healthy by association" trick by the mega food processors. They seem to think anything labeled healthy or organic we will be fooled into buying.
"Fat free" and "lite," are the ones I despise the most; "natural," is another meaningless food marketing trick to get us to buy.
Make no mistake. HEALTHY FOODS ARE PREPARED IN OUR HOME KITCHENS! And you can learn to do it, even if you have never learned to prepare food from scratch. You can take a cooking class, or learn on the Internet from exceptional teachers, etc. All for no cost.
(1) Use only good quality extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil in your kitchen, as well as an olive oil non-stick spray for cooking.
(2) You can make excellent salad dressings based on olive oil, a seasoned vinegar that you like, and a few herbs. You may supplement with a little of your favorite mustard, and perhaps a few ground walnuts. I found a lovely lemon flavored vinegar that is delightful in a simple vinegar and oil dressing.
When you are grinding the walnuts, toss in just a few raisins, dried cranberries, or cherries. A little practice and you'll be making salad dressings like a pro - really healthy dressings. Reading the ingredients labels of dressings in the stores will help you with other ideas. I make my own dressings all the time, and they never contain the exact same ingredients any two times!

The Role of Diet in Healing
First, food is not a panacea for what ails us. We tend to think of foods in terms of direct healing ability. Then we are thinking of foods as a replacement for prescribed drugs, which always leads to hand picking certain foods. That happened a few years ago by Dr. Terry Wahls when she credited her turn-around of her MS to discovering and eating lots of kale. It was widely reported in the press, and people who had MS all over the world accepted her recommendation and made kale a media created miracle food. I cannot tell you how many hundreds of people have written to me giving me how details of how this diet did not work for them.
Please hear me. There is no such thing as an MS diet that works for everyone. We should rather think of food as fuel to help the body to heal itself. Kale is a powerful healthy food, but it is not a miracle food for MS or anything else.
Instead we need to eat a wide variety of health-supporting foods such as:
Berries: strawberries, blackberries, blueberries
All the red, yellow and green veggies
Such fruits as red grapes, cherries, pineapple, apples
Veggies such as tomatoes (licopene), kale, mushrooms
All the greens we can - like chard, spinach, parsley, etc
All beans - from scratch or canned (well rinsed)
Spices like nutmeg and turmeric
Green tea, and red wine
Healthy Oils: Olive, Coconut, and Avocado
Oils to Avoid: Corn, Soy, Canola, Cottonseed, Peanut
Foods to Avoid:
All processed sugars and artificial sweeteners ― our brain doesn't know the difference.
All white flour and anything made from it. (Use whole wheat flour very sparingly.)
All processed foods should be avoided - avoid packaged and frozen processed foods. Processing destroys the benefits of most foods. They also contain harmful chemicals. We must learn to read ingredient labels. Forget the calories and so-called nutrients. The main thing I read on food labels is the ingredient list. Also note the order in which they are listed. Ingredients are supposed to be listed in order of quantity.
Fresh frozen veggies and fruits are also excellent choices
I have studied the subject of food and healing for the last 20 years. I read all the books, watch all the videos, and spend lots of time intently attending related webinars. I recently spent three hours each day, for eight strait days, participating in the Food Revolution Summit. It featured three presenters each day, all of whom are well known as experts in nutrition. I did not miss a single presenter, and I learned a great deal to help me make wiser choices and wiser recommendations.
One of the things to note is that they do not always agree, and what they were teaching five years ago may have evolved to incorporate new theories today. I certainly understand that. What I have recommend about food over the last 20 years has continued to evolve also.
NOTE: I do not have all the answers. But I am a good student and will continue to be as long as I have breath.
Food tips and a favorite recipe
CREAMY AVOCADO AND LIME DRESSING
1 Avocado (1 MEDIUM TO LARGE SIZE, OR TWO SMALL SIZE)
1/4 c. Cilantro
1 clove Garlic
1 t. lime or lemon juice, fresh
1/4 t. black pepper, ground
1/4 t. salt
3 t olive oil
1/4 c. sour-cream or plain Greek yogurt, low or full fat.
Water to thin as needed
Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender. Process until smooth, stopping several times to scrape down the sides. Thin with a little water to desired consistency. This is also excellent as a dip for fresh veggies, or a spread on grilled chicken or salmon.
NOTE (1): I found this recipe on the Internet, and I love it on all kinds of salad greens.
NOTE (2): I liked this dressing so much that I have experimented with a base of avocado and no or low-fat sour cream and olive oil, with various added flavors. I've made it with different flavored vinegars, mustard, etc.
