Hello to all my Journey to Wellness friends. if you are one our brand new subscribers, please know that I welcome you. When I began this NL, 18 years ago, I never dreamed that it would still be here all these years later. Many subscribers have been with me almost from the beginning, when I published the first book I wrote about my quest to overcome Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, From MS to Wellness.
The Betty's House . . . Life After MS website, as well as this NL, grew out of that book. I had a strong determination to defeat MS, and a belief that I could do that, although I early on did not know how I would accomplish that. In the ensuing years I learned how to reverse MS using real food and simple lifestyle changes, and I totally defeated my PP MS. Today I have no remaining signs that I ever had MS, and I have successfully taught others to duplicate what I have done.
Through my books, this newsletter, and one-on-one consultations I share what I have come to know about the healing process. I absolutely know that any and every person has within themselves the ability to heal.

In spite of all the books I have written, plus 18 years of
this newsletter, about my own recovery from Primary Progressive Multiple
Sclerosis, I am often asked what was responsible for my recovery. The physical
techniques are one aspect, but the most important building blocks are the
Please remember that to me healing and change are synonymous. So the fundamentals of physical healing of the body are no different than achieving any goal we may desire. Here are my five most important non-physical building blocks.
Desire and Intention: Les Brown used to say, "You have to be hungry." Hungry to be physically well. Hungry to achieve whatever success you desire. You must want it above everything else. If you don't have a strong desire or intention, then that is your first important step.
Once you have a strong enough desire, it will propel you forward to gather all the information you need for your journey.
Read good books. Every book I have written gives a list of he greatest and best books related to achievement. I also review suggested books here from time to time. Find the people on the Internet who have accomplished what you desire to accomplish. Study their recommendations. And please keep an open mind. If your mind is closed to new things, you will stay stuck in your current state.
Learn to meditate and tune into your own inner knowledge. It is probably the most effective technique for achieving anything in life.
Direction: I think the second element of achievement is direction. Direction is rather like a road map to guide you on your journey. I hear from people all the time who find me on the Internet, and they tell me about the things they have "tried," and how they didn't work for them, and about how they are discouraged.
In response to my questions I find out they sort of skimmed the surface of lifestyle changes without any commitment or understanding, and now they are looking yet again for a magic ingredient or answer for their problem.
Please hear me, your body does not work that way. How is it we can understand that it took years to develop whatever our challenge is, yet we expect to have success reversing it in a few days, weeks or months.
The biggest challenge I have as a health coach/consultant is challenging clients to accept that commitment to lifestyle changes is a lifetime commitment. Otherwise one just throws stuff at the fan to see if it sticks.
If you are feeling stuck, lack of desire and direction are probably at the core of our problem.
I often use the phrase, I will until. This is the foundation key to success.
Once you have your desire and direction firmly in place, then comes . . .
Discipline: Discipline is the glue that keeps us on track. Actually we need a set of disciplines. I recall when I was just finding my way through the maze after my MS diagnosis, I was fortunate to spend a week in Dr. Deepak Chopra's Center for Mind Body Medicine. At that time he had a resident program where you spent an entire week immersed in learning many of the things I have practiced all these years and teach today. Why? Because they work!!
● the importance of an unchanging daily routine
● to meditate (at first two times per day)
● the skill of visualization
● to study the writings of metaphysical masters, both classical and current
● the basics of Qi Gong and Yoga
The week I spent at the Chopra Center helped me to make life-changing alterations in most areas of my life. And those changes, together with a strong desire/intention to help my body heal itself as well as the discipline I learned there stays with me to this day, 21 years later.
It is also important to avoid distractions that tend to cause us to veer off track. Distractions come in all sizes and colors, and the onus is on us to stay vigilant to recognize them.
I don't promise it will be easy to reach your goal, but I do promise that it will be worth all the work to get there. I have forgotten who originally said "When opportunity knocks at the door, it is hard work that answers."

FACEBOOK IS NOW SQUARELY ON MY RADAR:
I continue to expand my Facebook presence. For years I totally avoided Facebook, only recognizing its value is a personal communication tool for family and friends. For me personally I considered it a time waster.
Then a few months ago I happened on a lady on the Internet who did webinars about the phenomenal business building tool Facebook contains. Who knew! I certainly do now, and I hope those of you who have been with me for a while recognize the commitment I have made to integrate Facebook into everything I am doing on the Internet.
The most important thing I learned about Facebook is that there are two kinds of FB pages. The "friend" page is called a personal profile. That is where you share family picture, etc., and that was the kind of page I have always had until just recently. Facebook will not allow any business to be conducted on your personal profile page. Then there is a Facebook business page, designed by Facebook to help you build an Internet business.
I have suggested in the past that you "friend" my Facebook page. I am now asking you to please "like" my business page. The business page address is www.Facebook.com/bettys.house. The number of likes your page gets is recorded by Facebook and leads to some benefits for the page owner.

I have been reading a book entitled "Be Unstoppable: The 8 Essential Actions to Succeed at Anything, by a former U.S. Navy Seal, Alden M. Mills.
This sea story begins by telling us it takes place in the town of Uptoyou, and I was immediately intrigued. It follows the lives of two young men who were born and raised in Uptoyou, Tim and Ted were neighbors as children, and they graduated in the same class at Uptoyou University.
Mr. Mills skillfully weaves his 8 essential actions to succeed into the lives of these two young men. It is a very interesting approach to teaching the life skills that we all wish to acquire, and I highly recommend Be Unstoppable.

HEALTHY RECIPES AND FOOD TIPS
Tangy, Creamy Broccoli Salad
8 oz. bacon
5 c. small broccoli florets
1 c. mayonnaise
1 T cider vinegar
1/3 c. chopped onion
1/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. raisins
1/2 c. sunflower kernels
Cut the bacon into small pieces and cook over medium heat just until crisp; drain on paper towels.
Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add the broccoli and blanch until bright green and slightly softened, about 3 minutes. (Do not overcook.) Drain well, run under cold water to stop the cooking, and drain again.
In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, vinegar, onion, sugar and raisins. Add the broccoli and toss the coat with the dressing. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
Just before servings, fold in the sunflower kernels and the bacon pieces. Serve immediately.

This is a superb recipe. However, in my kitchen I use sugar very sparingly, so I recommend substituting whatever artificial sweetener you like for the sugar. I usually use Stevia. You may also use a Greek yogurt based substitute for the fat-laden mayo. I always reduce all the ingredients by half.
Makes a great summertime main-dish salad with sliced rotisserie roasted chicken on top.
FOOD STORAGE TIPS:
Here are 10 most common foods people keep in the fridge, but shouldn’t.
The fridge does keep tomatoes fresh, but it does so by stopping the process of ripeness. Consequently they lose their flavor. In addition the refrigerator also changes the texture of the tomato, making it powdery or floury. Tomatoes are best kept out of cold environments.
When one keeps fresh basil in refrigeration, it withers very quickly, but before it withers all the way and becomes unusable, it absorbs the taste of the foods kept closest to it. Basil is best kept outside the fridge and in a glass of fresh water, just like flowers.
The cold temperatures in the fridge turns the starch in the potato into sugar at a faster pace than normal, and we're left with a sweet yet grainy potato. Keep your potatoes in a sealed sack and in a cool and dry place. They should be covered, because being exposed to sunlight makes them grow sprouts.
Tip: Keep an apple between them to keep them fresh!
The dampness in the fridge makes onions soft and moldy. The best place to keep onions is in a cool and dry place, outside the fridge. Green onions can be kept in the fridge because of their high percentage of water content. Do not keep onions next to the potatoes, because it will make them rot quicker.
If you're waiting for an avocado to ripen, you should never put it in the fridge. However, if the avocado has already ripened, placing it in the fridge will prevent it from going bad.
When we keep garlic in the refrigerator, it will grow green stalks. Also, it'll get a moldy, sticky texture. It is best to keep garlic in a dry, cool place.
When it comes to bread, there are a number of options. If you are going to use sliced bread within a few days, it can be kept in the fridge. If you intend on storing the bread for a longer period of time, keep in the freezer.
8. Olive Oil
Olive oil should be kept somewhere dark and cool - when placed in the refrigerator, it freezes and its texture becomes similar to butter. That said, you can thaw it again to its original state.
Storing coffee in the fridge makes it lose its flavor quickly and absorb the flavor of foods stored near it. Coffee should be kept somewhere dark and cool. However, if you want to keep a large amount of coffee at home, you can keep it in the depths of the freezer - not near the door.
One of the most fascinating facts about honey is that it never goes bad. There is no reason to keep it in the fridge, in fact it should be avoided as the cold temperatures will solidify it. Honey is best kept at room temperature.

We are so fortunate to live in this time in human history with all our cadre of technological gadgets that have tremendous effects in our lives. I often think of how different my life was 60 years ago. I had no television. No Internet based gadgets. I often wonder how I ever lived without my computer, which allows my connection to each one of you. And of course I would be lost without my iPad with which I manage so many aspects of my life.
YouTube has opened a vast array of knowledge and interests I hadn't even dreamed of previously. I jokingly refer to Google today as "God Google," because Google knows everything! My friend Bernard calls that service "Mr. Goog." But whatever we call that service, it opens all the knowledge in the entire world to all of us.
Some time ago I heard Jim Carrey interviewed by Oprah, and I quickly realized there was much more to him than I had previously been aware of. And a Google search turned up a couple of short little videos that I found very enlightening.
Jim Carrey, whom we mostly know as a very funny man, is also a very spiritually enlightened person. His brief 4 minute YouTube video on the power of intention is an excellent example. Enjoy.
Then I discovered Jim's 2.5 minute jewel on "Awakening." Take a brief break and enjoy it also.
Carl Harvey is a young man on the Internet whom I admire a lot. A few days ago he shared the following:
"The more you feel joyful when you do things and follow your urges, hunches, and higher vision, the more quickly and easily you will get what you ask for. EXERCISE, AND RELATED "STUFF"
Your body is designed to move. The most important thing about exercise is that you do it. Do something. Whatever works for you. Exercise benefits us in so many ways. If you live with any kind of disability, or perhaps just the aging process as I do, exercise is imperative to keep the muscles toned and healthy. Without exercise they begin to weaken, or scream in the form of pain, burning, etc. Toxins build up in muscles that are not used properly. Gentle stretching exercises are a must for us. Yoga and Qi Gong Tai Chi are part of a healthy daily routine. No matter what level of disability you may have, there are gentle yoga stretches and Qi Gong movements you can do either seated or lying on the floor.
Do not overlook the many benefits of walking. I call it the ultimate exercise. In any case, take responsibility for finding what will work for you, and then be diligent about doing it every day. Sitting on one's "seat of do-nothing" doesn't count!!
Qi Gong: I have now been practicing Qi Gong at least five days out of seven for about 19 years. I really credit Qi Gong with being a primary reason I walk and live a normal life today. I cannot overstate how important I feel it is.
Qi (chi in English means energy) and Gong means work. So Qi Gong simply means energy work, or working with our body's own energy, which is constantly in a state of flow throughout our body. The theory behind Qi Gong is that blockages in that energy flow bring about the symptoms Western medicine calls disease.
Learning these simple movements, combined with breathing techniques, are easy to learn and can really transform one's life.
Reflexology: If you have ever had a foot reflexology treatment, you know how incredibly wonderful it feels. The same is true of hand reflexology. All good manicurists are using the basics of hand reflexology when in the process of our manicure they massage our hands. If you have experienced that, you know how amazing it feels.
What we are feeling when we experience a hand or foot massage is the movement or our Chi or life force. Reflexology developed in ancient China out of Qi Gong, the healing form of Tai Chi. The ancient Chinese writings refer to the hands, feet and ears as microcosms of the entire body.
When you look at a Reflexology chart of either hands or feet you will note that there are indications of the various body parts represented by areas on the hands and feet. This theory shares the same origin as Acupuncture. Until recent years the Chinese theory regarding the ears did not find its way into Western alternative medicine. However, as Western Qi Gong practitioners were trained in China, more and more massaging the ears became a part of mainstream Qi Gong.
So now just as we have both hand and feet reflexology, there is a lesser known "auricular" therapy. Without calling it by name, Qi Gong masters almost all now teach massaging of the ears as part of body massage. I first learned ear massage as part of an introduction to Qi Gong when I attended the resident program at Dr. Deepak Chopra's Center for Mind Body Medicine 21 years ago.
We can all benefit by giving ourselves a foot, hand and/or ear massage. They are great healing tools, and you can do them in five minutes. If you are not doing these simple brief massages, try them every day for a week and let me know how the experience is for you, and I'll share them in a future issue Journey to Wellness.
If you have not yet read the special April 2016 Journey to Wellness psoas issue, you may read that HERE. Rebuilding the psoas plays a vital role in recovering strength in the lower body. For those who have either lost partial or complete ability to walk, or have developed a foot drop that is so common in MS, it is essential that one rebuild and strengthen the psoas. The referenced special psoas issue of this newsletter outlines a plan to accomplish that goal.

CANADIAN STEM CELL TRIAL RESULTS
NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland — All but 1 of the 24 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) participating in a Canadian study were relapse-free for as long as 13 years after receiving autologous hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT), new data show. The results were presented at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC) 2016 Annual Meeting by lead investigator Mark S. Freedman, MD, professor of medicine, University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. They are also published online June 9 in The Lancet.
Before transplantation, the 24 patients in the Canadian MS Bone Marrow Transplantation Study https://mssociety.ca/research-news/stem-cells/canadian-bone-marrow-transplantation-bmt-trial experienced 167 relapses, or 1.2 per patient per year, said Dr Freedman. After transplant, there were no relapses in the 23 surviving patients, out to 13 years of follow-up.
However, 1 patient (4%), died of hepatic necrosis and sepsis attributed to the chemotherapy regimen.
The rationale behind the stem cell transplant was to remove the diseased immune system and replace it with a fully functional system that would not redevelop MS. Even with that aim, the trialists had designed experiments to monitor signs that the disease was returning. But that has not happened.
"I was completely skeptical that we'd be able to achieve this," Dr Freedman told Medscape Medical News in an interview during the CMSC meeting.
But the results validate the goal set by these investigators. "If you're going to the extent of doing bone marrow transplant, you want to arrest the disease," he said. "You don't want to buy people 2 or 3 years of NEDA [no evidence of disease activity] and then have to take drugs again."
Mortality Rate "Unacceptably High"
In a linked commentary accompanying the Lancet publication, Jan Dörr, MD, from the NeuroCure Clinical Research Center, Charité-Universitätsmedizin, Berlin, Germany, called the results, "impressive and seem to outbalance any other available treatment for multiple sclerosis."
This trial is the first to show complete suppression of any inflammatory disease activity in every patient for a long period, Dr Dörr writes. "However, aHSCT has a poor safety profile, especially with regards to treatment-related mortality."
The study will probably not change the treatment for MS in the short term, he cautions, "mainly because the mortality rate will still be considered unacceptably high.
"Over the longer term [and] in view of the increasing popularity of using early aggressive treatment, there may be support for considering aHSCT less as a rescue therapy and more as a general treatment option, provided the different protocols are harmonised and optimised, the tolerability and safety profile can be further improved, and prognostic markers become available to identify patients at risk of poor prognosis in whom a potentially more hazardous treatment might be justified."
Michael K. Racke, MD, professor of neurology and neuroscience at Wexner Medical Center at the Ohio State University in Columbus, also called the results impressive. "They didn't see any evidence after transplant of any patients having MRI lesions," Dr Racke told Medscape Medical News. On the other hand, one patient died, "presumably as a complication off the transplant because it's a more aggressive regimen," he said.
Still, that doesn't rule transplant out as a treatment for some patients, said Dr Racke, noting that other MS therapies come with dangerous side effects. "We've gone to an era now where as we have higher efficacy treatments, they are also associated with higher risks," he said. With stem cell transplants, the issue will be to "balance the intensity of the regimens with the associated risks."
No one is advocating stem cell transplants for newly diagnosed patients, said Dr Racke, who is also an investigator in the HALT-MS (High-dose Immunosuppression and Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation for Poor Prognosis Multiple Sclerosis) trial. Researchers "are talking about patients who have already broken through several treatments," he said, adding that "those patients are already at risk for poor prognosis."
Robert Lisak, MD, president of the CMSC, also sounded a note of caution. For now, it appears that researchers cannot predict which patients will benefit from a transplant, Dr Lisak told Medscape Medical News. "The other thing is it's not clear the stem cells are doing anything," said Dr Lisak, Parker Webber Chair in Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan.
